Shortly after Maximus had left Matthias and returned to the Antonia Fortress, a young messenger boy approached the Soldiers’ Gate through which he had just passed.

“What is your business, boy” one of the guards asked.

“I carry a message for your blacksmith, a man named Jacobus,” the lad said.

“He is there,” the soldier told him, pointing across the courtyard. Several squads of legionnaires were drilling in the open air, practicing their fighting skills with shield and pilum. “Deliver your message and do not linger. And go around the troops, not through them, unless you want to be skewered.”

The messenger scurried off, jogging around the outer wall of the courtyard, far from the fray. In a moment, he stood before the burly blacksmith, who had stepped away from his work and the din of the bellows and hammers to receive his message.

“A friend bade me tell you that thieves are reaping the wheat before it is ready for harvest, and that he wishes to discuss with you what to do,” the youth said.

Jacobus retrieved a coin from his pouch and pressed it into the boy’s palm.

“Tell my friend that I will meet him in the usual place at the usual time,” the armorer said.

The boy nodded, turned and began to run back toward the gate. Jacobus’ powerful hand grabbed the back of his shirt and stopped him, for the youth had started to run directly toward the legionnaires and their melee.

“That way,” he said, turning and gently pushing him toward the outer wall.
