Chapter Twenty-Four
Ryan stumbles forward into a high-ceilinged room. The snixes pulled his and Arielâs hoods back at the Castle gate. No way to keep their Guardian identity hidden anymore. Three other snixes marched off in a different direction with Ariel, but Ryan isnât worried. She could take them. The problem now would be finding her. Assuming he can escape from Destroyerâs throne room.
His feet echo on polished wooden boards and beads of sweat drip down his back. Itâs hotter than a nude beach in here. Posts of fire line a red carpet leading up shining stairs to a platform throne. A massive black Alicorn turns to face Ryan from the platform and his glaring red eyes make Ryanâs chest tighten. The high metal doors groan shut behind him at the hands of two snixes.
âRyan Tracey,â Destroyer says at the other end of the long room. âYouâre a hard Guardian to find.â
Ryan doesnât respond. If Destroyer wants something, heâll have to ask. A snix hand from behind Ryan nudges him forward. Ryan walks far enough forward that heâs out of armâs reach, and then he stops. Destroyer prances down the steps and then the carpet muffles his hooves.
âIt was convenient of you to leave when you did,â Destroyer says. âI got the chance to really ruffle your partner.â He draws out the last two words like a slow drip from a sponge.
Ryanâs fingers tighten, but he doesnât respond. Not yet. Heâs incredibly outnumbered with Destroyer and two snixes, even with his light. Heâd prefer not to die right when Ariel started to let him in. Her admitting with sincerity that she was happy to be partnered with him was enough to confirm his decision to back out on Kat. There was a future waiting for him in Agalrae if he could only reach it.
Destroyer steps past Ryan and circles him. His black coat flashes shades of orange as he passes firelight from the torches.
âYou know I can kill you,â Destroyer says. âYouâve walked willingly into my territory. The powers of darkness outweigh anything the Creator has trapped inside of you. Donât underestimate me.â
Destroyer pauses to let that settle with Ryan. But Ryan just asks himself, How many times has he practiced this speech?
âWe have something in common,â Destroyer says. He speaks each word deliberately like itâs a separate sentence. âWe both want Ariel.â
Ryan pulls a deep, slow breath in through his lungs and holds it in his chest.
Destroyer stops in front of him and flares his black wings just a bit from his body. âExcept sheâll only fit with me.â
Ryan doesnât block the hatred that hardens his expression. Go on, let Destroyer know heâs gotten under his skin. Keep it coming. Hit me with your best shot.
âI know more about her than you ever will.â
âYouâre wrong.â
Destroyer snorts. âI donât like being challenged in my own home.â
Ryanâs spine tightens when swords hiss from sheaths behind him, but with a single nod from Destroyer, they clatter back into their hilts.
âHereâs whatâs going to happen,â Destroyer says.
