Chapter Sixteen

By some miracle she made it to the reclamation room without tripping over her own feet. She’d forgotten to bring a lantern, so she’d used her comband to light the way.

Her insides were still doing barrel rolls. How was she supposed to shrug this off? She’d been able to push Isin’s job choice to the back of her mind while they’d focused on the ship repairs. But those scars—

She emptied her load into the open bin. It wouldn’t process the raw materials until they got the electrical system working, but at least the pieces weren’t cluttering up the bridge.

The bridge. She didn’t want to go back there. Not while the evidence of his violent actions were on full display.

And what about your actions?

She flinched. Isin’s voice, this time in her head. Ironically, while she’d lived with the Setarips, she’d come to rely on that voice as her conscience.

As usual, the voice was right. Who was she to judge him? Her hands were covered with blood, too. She may not have killed anyone directly, but she hadn’t tried to stop Tnaryt. At least, not until Aurora had shown up.

She sagged against the bulkhead and closed her eyes, forcing her lungs to draw in slow, steady breaths. Debating with herself was a bad habit that never got her anywhere. She needed to get back to work.

However, she took the long route, using the aft stairs to reach A deck and making a stop at the crew WC before continuing toward the bridge. Maybe she should start working on the internal wiring from the bridge to the engine room. She could let him work on the tactical console and comm system while she repaired the connections in the corridors and access tunnels.

Coward.

Yep.

She slowed her steps, rehearsing what she was going to say as she made her way up the stairs to the bridge. She found Isin on his back, wedged under the tactical console. Good. She wouldn’t have to look at him. “I’m going to start repairing the electrical lines from the bridge to the engine room.”

“Fine.”

She blinked. Was he really not going to give her an argument? He’d challenged her about everything else. Why not this? Her gaze swept the bridge, looking for anything that might explain why he wasn’t putting up a fight. But she came up empty. “Well, I’ll go then.”

He grunted in response.

She gathered the tools and supplies she’d need, as well as the water and food he’d brought her and the lantern she’d forgotten last time.

When she reached A deck, she took a few minutes to eat, more to keep up her strength than because she was hungry. That chore accomplished, she focused on the access panel for the A deck landing.

The interior was marred by scorch marks from the electrical fire that had followed the surge of electricity along the conduits. The ship’s fire-suppression system had contained the fire inside the bulkheads, but she had a lot of wiring to replace.

Pulling out her tools, she set
