Chapter 13

Anna looked at Albert, her expression concerned. For once the trouble he encountered wasn’t her fault but he was supposed to be on holiday and all that kept coming his way was trouble. She shuddered as she thought of what could have occurred if they hadn’t used their wits.

“I think he brings criminals with him,” Susannah said from where she sat on the ground near the lake. “He just can’t stop working.” Her expression became more serious as she looked across to where Randy sat talking to Celeste, his face animated and hers filled with interest. “But in this case it has brought about a lot of good. I hope he’s not telling Celeste what’s planned for tomorrow in Lone Pine.”

“He won’t do that,” Albert said. “He’s so excited about belonging to Jesus.”

“I think I’ll make sure. Come on, Noah, let’s join them.”

Albert grinned at Anna. “Detectives are born suspicious.”

She smiled and felt a bit in shock from what she’d been told. “What age is their first case?”

“About three months.”

“Linda said she thinks babies can’t see much until six weeks and Tara said she put books in the twins’ cots to test that out. At about six weeks they put their hands out to try to pull the books out from the sides of the mattresses and succeeded after trying for some time.”

“I didn’t know that,” Albert said. “My mother didn’t mention it.”

“Mine either. I get the shivers when I think of what could have happened to you, but I’m selfishly pleased that it had nothing to do with me.”

He put out his hand to touch hers for an instant and she felt the invariable tingling from the contact. “You have brought me nothing but good. If anyone told me before I left that I would be baptised today I would have thought it ridiculous. And then there’s Randy. He’s only been a Christian for a couple of days but he looks quite different to when I met him.”

“And Celeste seems to like him.”

“He definitely likes her.”

“Which is where their problems might begin.”

“Let’s not think about that,” Albert said.

“No. Sorry.”

“Your fears are understandable. I think Jonathon is going to make an announcement. I’m a bit nervous.”

He moved his hand to hold hers though he did it surreptitiously between them and she squeezed it, happy to have it there and sharing in his apprehension. Being baptised after a lifetime of denying God’s call on his life. Things ahead of him where he wanted to make any wrongs against people right. Jonathon asked those who were to be baptised to join him and Derris and led the way into the water.

Anna found tears rising to her eyes when Albert told everyone what happened and the miracle of Jonathon joining him at just the right time. God was so amazing, she thought, and this demonstration of the love of Jesus moving, in the way it was when the Asian ladies were baptised on their arrival in Lower Pine.

Albert came out of the water grinning widely at her and that brought a smile to her face.
