“Hank seemed a bit cranky this morning,” my mother commented as we sat at the kitchen table with our scrambled eggs.

“Yeah, he’s probably upset with me for harassing him about his mother being here.” I paused briefly. “I know he’s grieving, so it’s probably added stress for him. He doesn’t want her being alone right now.”

She gave me a sideways glance before turning her eyebrows down. “Is that all?”

“Isn’t that enough?” My voice was small.

After giving me a penetrating look again, she lifted the corner of one of the placemats on the table. Underneath it was a neon blue Post-it Note—the same neon blue Post-it Note I’d left for Hank to read on the living room table last night. With my brain on wine, I’d made the lousy choice of confronting him with the “golden earring” on a small piece of paper.

I grabbed it from her hand, silently reading my messy handwriting.
