Annie accompanied them carrying a basket in case Grace made any purchases. It would never do for a countess to be seen carrying packages herself.

They strolled to Cecil Square and she was pleased with what she discovered there. Adam was happy to accompany her into the spacious library a little distance away in Hawley Square. This reminded her of Grosvenor Square, where their town house was, as it was built around a small, rectangular pleasure garden. They entered a handsome building and she looked around Bettison’s Library in glee.

‘Might I be permitted to buy a book?’

‘My dear, you may have whatever you want. Have them parcelled up and delivered and the account will be settled then.’ He strolled off to peruse the newspapers and journals allowing her to wander freely up and down the shelves exclaiming every time she saw something she liked.

She was conscious that he’d be waiting for her for some time but he appeared to be happily engrossed in his newspaper, which was a relief.

‘I’m afraid that I’ve bought seven new books. Thank you so much – I do love to read a romantic novel.’

‘Shall we go in search of the shell room or is there somewhere else you’d like to go?’

‘I’m sure that the shell room is fascinating and educational, but if I really have the choice then I’d like a cool drink and an ice if there are any to be found in Margate. I did so enjoy the ices I had at Gunter’s in London.’

For the first time that afternoon his smile was warm. ‘Edward has given me the direction of exactly the place we require. The building, the most prestigious hotel in Margate, the Royal Hotel, also houses the assembly rooms.’

‘How exciting! I should dearly like to investigate those rooms after we’ve had our refreshments.’

The remainder of the excursion was quite delightful, the lemonade delicious, the ices almost as good as those one got in Town, and Adam was excellent company and most charming.

As they were walking home she saw someone she recognised. ‘Over there, Adam, I’m sure that’s Bishop isn’t it? What is she doing here?’
