Chapter 6: Laredo-Bound
Park
Park spent their second night as a married couple sleeping on his leather sofa in his minuscule living room. Though he wasnât a giant like Jack Gaines, he was still a little too tall to spend many days on a sofa without getting a crick in his neck and throwing his back out of line.
The next morning, he rose before Bernadette with the full intention of hobbling his way down to the livery to hire them a ride to the telegraph office in Woody. However, she appeared in the doorway of his bedroom, dressed but with disheveled hair before he could slip quietly down the stairs.
She stood there brushing her gloriously long auburn hair. âIf you can wait another five or ten minutes, I can join you and save you the trip back here. I packed my travel bag last night.â
So had he. Both bags were resting at his feet beside the stairs. Still, he marveled at her efficiency. Most women of his acquaintance, his mother included, traveled like queens with no less than a mountain of trunks and bags. He wasnât accustomed to a woman who could dress quickly, travel light, and keep pace with him.
âWhy the frown?â Bernadette demanded.
He lounged against the railing leading downstairs. âI was just thinking.â
âAbout the traffickers?â
âNo, about this.â He spread his hands to take in the cozy living area. Heâd thrown back the dark drapes from the balcony door and windows after heâd dressed. The morning sun was pouring through the panes, making the freshly polished wood plank floor gleam a golden hue.
âAnd that made you frown so ferociously?â she teased, twisting her hair up and securing it with a few pins.
âIt was more a frown of contemplation,â he corrected.
âAbout,â she prodded.
âUs,â he said simply. âDespite the crick in my neck, this is nice. Normally, I work long hours and come home alone. Being with you, having you around to talk to isâ¦nice.â
Though her cheeks turned pink, she scowled across the narrow room at him. âWhy do you have a crick in your neck?â Then her scowl cleared. âOh.â She flushed harder and glanced at the sofa. âYouâre a little tall for the sofa. I am sorry I didnât think of this sooner, but maybe I am the one who should be sleeping on the sofa.â
He snorted and folded his arms. âMy wife will not be sleeping on a sofa, and that is that.â
She folded her arms in mimicry of him. âWhy not? It makes more sense than our current arrangement.â
âBecause youâre my wife.â He floundered for the right words. âItâs my job to provide for you, to do whatâs best for you.â
Cheeks still a fiery color, she stabbed her brush in the air between them. âHow is having a husband with a crick in his neck what is best for me?â
He arched a brow at her, adoring the teasing light in her eyes. My word! Bernadette was turning out to be like no other debutante heâd ever encountered. She was
