Belly of the Beast

Gene’s truck pulled into an attached garage of an upgraded farmhouse that Jared was unfamiliar with. Gene and Phyllis had rented this farmhouse over the last few months, escaping from escalating violence and economic scarcity in Illinois, which was now officially bankrupt.

Gene’s business was still officially being run by his foreman, but with the state officially out of funds for even the most dire needs, the road building that had kept his company in business for over two decades was slim to non-existent.

Gene gave Phyllis and Jared a hand signal to wait as he pulled his Beretta out and cautiously opened the door from the attached garage to the house.

“Monster get down, ya big bastard! It’s all clear, come on in”, Gene walked through the door shoving the dog out of the way, turning on more lights. Their giant English Mastiff, Monster, slobbering a greeting, jumped up on Jared, seemingly happy as hell to see him. “Hey buddy!” Jared said, ruffling up the dog’s ears and head, causing slobber to fly everywhere.

“Jared I got the extra room ready for you, if you want to put your things in there.” “Ok Aunt Phyllis sounds great.”

Uncle Gene pulled a beautiful black marble urn off the mantle over the fireplace. With tears springing to his eyes, he handed it to Jared “your Dad, home at last.” Impatiently wiping the tears away with the back of his hand, Jared solemnly held the urn, saying a silent prayer to his father, who had never regained consciousness when he was found imprisoned at the FEMA camp they had raided.

They had gotten him out of that hell hole thank God, but he hadn’t made it. Now he was with his wife and son, and Jared and his brother Gene were left, here on this plane, to fight this vile evil and fight they would continue to do.

“Thank you for taking care of this, of him, I’m glad we found him, even if he didn’t make it, I know we did the right thing, for him, for all of us.” Jared said with emotion, with conviction.

After a couple hours of telling tales of what he’d went through trying to survive as a fugitive, homeless, eating pigeons in Gary Indiana, everyone was ready to turn in.

Jared woke up early to the smell of coffee brewing, when he ambled out to the kitchen Gene was sitting at the kitchen table with Brock, who had flown a twin engine Cessna into a local airfield at dawn and walked the five miles to the house. “Brock, good to see you buddy!” “You’re not kidding Jared, we all thought you were a goner!” Brock got up from his chair and the two embraced.

“Not to rush you Gene, but I’d like to check on my sister and pick Rosie up without spending too much time on the ground. My sister, and me by default, are going to have the whole damn Federal shadow government in an uproar, I need to get out of this area with the goods as quickly as I can.
