Chapter Fifteen
Katherine didnât have to think about answering the call. âHello.â As she spoke, she headed upstairs to her bedroom. She couldnât talk to Tom sitting next to Ryan.
âKatherine, are you all right?â The urgency in Tomâs voice surprised her.
âIâm fine. Why wouldnât I be?â
âBecause theyâre reporting a tornado at the lake. Shelly saw it on the Internet and called me.â
âIt wasnât a tornado, it was a waterspout.â Repeating what sheâd just heard the reporter say, she added, âThey break up when they hit land.â
âFine, fine, a waterspout. Whatever the hell it was, the weather sounds god-awful up there. I just checked the Internet myself. There are all sorts of storm warnings where you are.â
This wasnât how Katherine expected their first phone call to go. âThereâs no need to worry, Iâm home and safe.â
âWhy didnât you call to let me know that? Christ, I thought you might be caught outside in these thunderstorms.â
âI had no idea you knew about the weather here, or that you were worried.â
âWell, I am worried about you, and itâs not just about the weather. When are you coming home?â
âI donât know.â
âShelly told me youâre thinking of staying all summer. Is that true?â
âIâm thinking about it. I like it here.â
âItâs not safe for you to be there alone.â
âLike I told Shelly, Mother stayed here for years by herself and nothing ever happened to her.â
âYouâre not your mother.â
âI know that better than anyone.â
âIf youâre serious about staying there for three months, Iâd like to know why.â
âBecause I need to be alone and think. Iâm not happy, Tom, and Iâm trying to figure out what to do about it.â
âDoes that include our marriage?â
âOf course it does, and my career.â
âYour career?â
âI want to be a real photographer again.â Remembering what Ben had said, she added, âMaybe even do a book of my photographs.â
âYou never told me that.â
âI didnât know for sure until now.â
âHave you been taking pictures this week?â
âQuite a few. Iâm enjoying it.â
âMore than what you did here?â
âIâm enjoying it a lot more than what I did for Serapis, if thatâs what you mean.â Katherine hesitated, and then blurted out, âDo you have any idea how demoralizing it was for me to be doing headshots for you? I used to be an international photographer.â
âWhy did you do it if it was so damned demoralizing?â
âBecause at least I had a camera in my hands again.â
âKatherine, I never stopped you from going back to work. If thatâs what you want, then do it.â
âWould you publish a book of my pictures if I asked you to?â
âYou know we donât publish coffee table books.â
âThat makes it sound like a coaster for your iced tea.â
âStop being so damned touchy. You know weâve never done oversized art books. Iâd have a fight on my hands if I tried to push one through, especially for my wife.â
âAll right then, with your connections, would you help me find someone who would do a book with me?â
âI could try, if thatâs what you want. But you would need a theme, and the pictures would have to be good.
