Jason Varitek, ejected following his scuffle at home plate with Alex Rodriguez, was cooling his heels in the dressing room when Mueller connected for the game-winner. “I think my head almost hit the ceiling in the locker room,” he recalled later. “It was awesome.”

Varitek was suspended for his role in the incident and Doug Mirabelli got a rare chance to play a few days in succession.

DOUG MIRABELLI

“I hit pretty well, I guess. There’s not a ton I can remember. I was just trying to keep us moving forward. I remember some of the hits. I think I hit a home run during that 4-game stand. We won a few of those games but it doesn’t really stand out as anything special. I caught Schilling. I’d like to think that he had a lot of confidence in me behind the late for the times that I did catch him. I studied pitchers. Coming up through the minor leagues, and even in the major leagues, I was more of a defensive catch-and-throw guy. So I took pride in my defense and I took pride in knowing the hitters and having good recall on what they’d done, not only in that game, but what they’d done in the past and what I’d seen out of them. Today there are so many reports that you can lean on and say, Ok this is how this guy hits, so I felt very confident catching anybody else on the staff because I knew the hitters.”
