Chapter Eighteen

“I’ve been thinking about this clinic of yours,” Shelly said as Jackie and Sam walked up to them. “I think I’d like to be a part of it if you’ll have me.”

Jackie held her excitement back and turned to Shelly with as deadpan an expression as she could. “What exactly were you thinking?”

“We’ve hired another doctor at the practice, and I was thinking of making her a full partner. With that I would be able to cut my hours back there and maybe practice here at least one day a week.” She looked to Liz for approval before turning back to Jackie and telling her, “I thought maybe I could rent one of your offices with the understanding that I could use it to see one or two of my normal, paying patients here as well as for the pro bono work.” She stopped talking when Jackie turned her back on her and stood quietly. She looked at Liz and shrugged. “If you have other plans for the offices, that’s fine too.”

After thinking for a moment, Jackie spun around and took Shelly’s arm through her own, leading her over to the one closed door in the building. She took a key out of her pocket and handed it to Shelly, tilting her head towards the door with a nod.

Shelly looked at the key and at Jackie. “You’re two steps ahead of me again, aren’t you?”

Jackie just smiled and waited quietly for her to open the door. Shelly unlocked the door and pushed it open. The office was painted a light blue with a mural on one focus wall of the setting sun in various shades of yellow and orange. The carpet underfoot was soft and thick, in just the right shade of gray. The large antique desk sat directly facing the doorway with a wall of bookshelves behind it. The wall across from the mural was occupied by a set of French doors leading out onto a private patio. She stepped into the office and looked around, stunned at the amount of work and thought Jackie had put into the place. She walked up to the desk.

“Don’t touch it yet. I’m not done finishing it. That’s why there’s plastic under it.”

Shelly turned and smiled, a look of wonder in her eyes. “You’re finishing it yourself?” At Jackie’s nod she took a closer look. “It is going to be beautiful. You’ve thought of everything.”

“Only the best for the best doctor in the place.”

“I don’t know what to say.” Shelly looked at Liz who smiled at her lovingly. “I know you’re planning on having doctors share offices on a rotating schedule, but I don’t want to share this.” She spread her arms indicating everything in the room. “I know that isn’t fair. I just…”

“If you won’t share it with another doctor, will you consider sharing it with me?” Jackie asked.

“I’d be honored to.” Shelly walked up to Jackie and gave her a hug. “You amaze me. Thank you.”
