Chapter Twenty

As Rosa waited for Miles to arrive, she switched back and forth between checking the window and cleaning the house. She already had to clean the window twice to remove her nose prints. If he took much longer, she’d have to start cleaning the entire house for the second time. Never mind the fact that it wasn’t afternoon yet.

Expecting Miles wasn’t the only thing that continually brought her to the window. Over the last few days, families had been leaving town, but today, it seemed like a mass exodus. She’d never seen so much activity. She’d have to check with Mama later to see if she’d heard anything about Santa Anna’s arrival that would cause so many people to leave all at once.

She returned to wiping away spiderwebs from the corners of the house, wondering how much longer before Miles would show. When the knock finally came, it made her jump then brought a smile. She rushed to the door and yanked it open. Miles looked better every time she saw him. More rested this time, too.

“I was starting to wonder if you’d remembered.”

His eyes widened. “Is it even afternoon yet?”

She laughed and motioned him inside. “I was ready as soon as I rose this morning.”

He mimicked her by motioning her outside. “Then let’s get started.”

Once she’d grabbed her shawl and wrapped it around her shoulders, he offered his elbow.

“Which way this time?”

“North. Maybe we’ll see those deer your friend mentioned. Then we can go west to check your parents’ place.”

“Check it for what?”

She shrugged. “I just want to make sure I can remember how to get there.”

He tugged her to a stop and peered into her eyes. “Is that really the only reason?”

She made a face. “I’ve noticed a lot of people leaving lately. Makes me wonder if Santa Anna and his men are close. If so, I may take you up on your offer to stay there while they’re here.”

“I hope you do. I think you’ll be safer farther from town.”

They continued through town and would soon pass the dry goods store. Miles slowed her one more time. “Maybe I should pick up some supplies to keep at my place. I don’t want you to have to come out of hiding unless absolutely necessary.”

“But I don’t even know if I’ll need to use it yet.”

“I’d feel better if I knew you had everything you’ll need.”

He was probably worrying for nothing, but if it helped him feel better, she’d agree. “All right. Plus it gives us a chance to see Ana again.”

Once inside the store, Rosa, Ana, and Miles meandered along the shelves doing more talking than shopping. After Miles placed some dried beef into the basket, he looked bored. Or maybe it was impatience, almost uneasiness, but he smiled in all the right places. It was time to purchase the supplies and be on their way before she completely lost his attention.

She led them to the front so Ana could total the items. “Will you be seeing John today?”

“I don’t know.
