â½â½â½
I pull up to Bretâs house and honk twice to let him know Iâm here. I offered to drive since weâd be in my neck of the woods. It also makes me feel like I have the upper hand somehow. His Jeep doesnât allow me to think clearly and itâs a warm October morning; my hair could not survive two hours with the top off.
âReady, Dr. Dre?â Bret opens the back door, throws in his carry-on and hangs up his suit bag. Bret did make sure to tell me that the wedding was going to be dressy. Itâs an evening wedding at a swanky downtown hotel. The couple is older, well our age, so theyâve got the money to throw a pretty classy affair.
I purchased my first little black dress for the occasion. Well, itâs more of a large black dress, but itâs still a first!
âHow do you like the new ride?â he asks as he settles in the passenger seat.
âI love it,â I say with a smirk, wondering what automobile category Iâm in now for him. Backing out of the driveway, I ask, âSo, ever been to Cleveland?â
âCanât say I have.â He laughs and removes his phone from his pocket touching the screen. âSorry,â he apologizes for the distraction, âMy buddy, Mack, just landed in Cleveland. We are goinâ to meet up for lunch, if youâd like to join us?â
âThank you, but Iâm going to go hang out with my sister for the afternoon. The wedding starts at five, right?â I think of the timeline; this means I will have to start getting ready at like two-thirty. It will take fifteen minutes just to get my Spanx on.
âYou got it.â He looks out the window. Is this when the ride will become uncomfortable?
âSo, the groom is your friend from high school, right? Has he been married before?â I decide to get the scoop on the wedding to pass the time.
âYep, known him since I was a kid. And no, actually, this is his first marriage,â Bret pauses. âOut of that group of friends, only me and one other guy are married.â I wait for his explanation to hit him. I know it does when he grabs his bottom lip, clamping it between his fingers. He shakes off the thought and continues. âThere are five of us. So, two married, then there is me and the two others are still single.â He has now put himself in a separate category all together.
I start to say that I canât imagine still being single at forty but quickly realize that I am pretty much just that. Well, almost.
âWill this group of friends all be there tonight?â I ask, curious how raucous this might get with all of these good olâboys together again.
âNo, unfortunately. Just Austin, thatâs the groom, me, and Mack, who I was textinâ earlier. One guy just had a baby and our other buddy is in China for work.â
âGotcha. So does Austin live in Atlanta?â
âNo, they actually live in Charlotte, his soon-to-be wife wanted to get married in her hometown though.
