TWENTY-SEVEN

“Your mom just took off?” Eric sat on the edge of the closest desk, his eyes wide. “Without saying anything? She just left that card.”

Lucas didn’t want to admit he was scared to look up the case number, though he would in a minute. Which was what he’d been telling himself since he got to work at seven. Now it was nearly eight.

Even McCauley looked stunned. Neither his partner nor his captain was at all confused as to why Lucas didn’t sit down and immediately look it up.

Come on.

He shifted his fingers to the keys but didn’t type. He needed to catch his breath first.

Six years, and she just came in and sat down. Injured, but acting like that wasn’t the full story of why she was there. If he believed that. She likely only needed medical attention from Freya because her usual contact was busy and traded enough information with them to get it. Feeding small bits to keep them talking.

Lucas turned over the evidence bag containing the card she’d left on Freya’s table. Just do it. He typed the case number into his computer.

McCauley said, “I need more coffee,” and wandered to the break room.

“You think he knows more than he’s saying?” Lucas asked.

Eric shrugged. “Maybe. What’s the case file?”

“It’s searching.”

“So tell me how you left it with Freya.”

Lucas frowned. Eric was supposed to be working on the case, running down leads. Instead it seemed like he was more interested in the interaction between Lucas and the paramedic. Was that the point here? “Why do you want to know?”

“Because Stella and I can double-date with you guys, like after church on Sundays. Why else do you think?”

As if things would settle enough that they went to church and then out for lunch after? “That’s not what’s happening here.”

Eric snorted. “Sure.”

Lucas shook his head. The idea was tempting because he had to face facts. Freya was temping. But he was a little busy right now, solving this case. Too busy for the distraction a woman like that would be. She’d take all his attention—because that was exactly how it was supposed to go. The Bible even said those who were married cared about their spouse, but those who were single could care about the things of the Lord first.

Not that married people didn’t care about what they needed to be doing for God. Hopefully they could pursue those things together, as a couple.

But since he was single, he could focus on this job God had given him—or at least, the one that He hadn’t taken away yet.

Lucas was a detective. He needed to concentrate on doing the best job he could, not lose focus because he wanted to spend time with her. That would only mean he jeopardized this case when he missed something that proved to be key. Lost a lead. He would end up not figuring out what on earth his mother was into.

Malaysian cartels.

Murder.

Freya’s father.

She could even know something and be withholding it from him because he was on this case.
