Chapter 23
The summer days flew by for Kara. Before she felt ready, it was time for her in-laws to visit. Two weeks earlier, the older couple had announced their plans.
âWeâre sorry itâs taken so long to make the arrangements,â Alice began. âBut you know how busy the landscaping business can be this time of year.â
âI totally understand,â Kara said. âIâm just happy we can chat online.â
âWho wouldâve thought itâd come to this, you know, people able to talk through a computer, or cell phone?â Jon began. âItâs like the next best thing to being there.â
âNot quite,â Alice told him. âChecking on Karaâs progress with the pregnancy this way isnât the same.â
Jon rolled his eyes. âSheâs impatient, although, thatâs putting it mildly.â
âWell, Iâm sorry, dear, but you know how it is.â Alice turned her attention to Kara. âSo, weâll fly into Bozeman Thursday and leave two Saturdays after that which makes our stay about a week and a half.â
Kara smiled. âWhatever time we can spend together will be awesome and donât worry about a thing. My brother has plenty of room in his house and thereâs an extra bedroom with your name on the door.â
âWe hate to impose,â Jon said.
âI understand, but Davey will have it no other way.â
âAt least not having to drive back and forth from town, we can spend more time with you,â Alice said. After giving their flight schedule, they ended the call.
At the appointed time, Kara watched the older couple enter the airport corridor, waving frantically to get their attention. The two women came together, embracing.
âI know you showed us your tummy when we chat, but seeing you in person does my heart good,â Alice said, releasing her daughter-in-law. She brushed away a few tears.
âAlmost five months along and counting,â Kara said, patting her stomach, swiping at a few tears of her own.
âYou look wonderful.â Jon gave her a hug.
âYou arenât looking bad yourself,â Kara said.
Alice groaned. âIâve been looking forward to having a break from all the chaos, although I have no business complaining.â
âWell, Iâm glad youâre hereâboth of you,â Kara began. âIâm sure your sons can handle the business just fine.â
Her mother-in-law sighed. âYou are absolutely looking the picture of health. That lilac dress enhances your summer tan.â
Kara laughed and looked at her garment. She had chosen a sleeveless summer dress with a round neckline. âThanks, Alice. I feel great and for the most part eat healthy.â
The older woman rubbed Karaâs upper arm. âIt shows.â
After they got their luggage, the three went for the parking lot.
âMy girlfriend, Bobbie, traded cars with me for the time youâre in town.
âYou shouldâve let us rent a car,â Jon put in.
âDonât worry. Everything is fine.â
Their first stop was the auto body shop.
âDavey is looking forward to seeing you,â Kara explained. âSandy is filling in for me while youâre in town so weâll have that quality time weâd hoped for.â
Going inside, Sandy was the first to greet them, her little girl content in the baby swing, playing with her fingers.
