Chapter 23

The summer days flew by for Kara. Before she felt ready, it was time for her in-laws to visit. Two weeks earlier, the older couple had announced their plans.

“We’re sorry it’s taken so long to make the arrangements,” Alice began. “But you know how busy the landscaping business can be this time of year.”

“I totally understand,” Kara said. “I’m just happy we can chat online.”

“Who would’ve thought it’d come to this, you know, people able to talk through a computer, or cell phone?” Jon began. “It’s like the next best thing to being there.”

“Not quite,” Alice told him. “Checking on Kara’s progress with the pregnancy this way isn’t the same.”

Jon rolled his eyes. “She’s impatient, although, that’s putting it mildly.”

“Well, I’m sorry, dear, but you know how it is.” Alice turned her attention to Kara. “So, we’ll fly into Bozeman Thursday and leave two Saturdays after that which makes our stay about a week and a half.”

Kara smiled. “Whatever time we can spend together will be awesome and don’t worry about a thing. My brother has plenty of room in his house and there’s an extra bedroom with your name on the door.”

“We hate to impose,” Jon said.

“I understand, but Davey will have it no other way.”

“At least not having to drive back and forth from town, we can spend more time with you,” Alice said. After giving their flight schedule, they ended the call.

At the appointed time, Kara watched the older couple enter the airport corridor, waving frantically to get their attention. The two women came together, embracing.

“I know you showed us your tummy when we chat, but seeing you in person does my heart good,” Alice said, releasing her daughter-in-law. She brushed away a few tears.

“Almost five months along and counting,” Kara said, patting her stomach, swiping at a few tears of her own.

“You look wonderful.” Jon gave her a hug.

“You aren’t looking bad yourself,” Kara said.

Alice groaned. “I’ve been looking forward to having a break from all the chaos, although I have no business complaining.”

“Well, I’m glad you’re here—both of you,” Kara began. “I’m sure your sons can handle the business just fine.”

Her mother-in-law sighed. “You are absolutely looking the picture of health. That lilac dress enhances your summer tan.”

Kara laughed and looked at her garment. She had chosen a sleeveless summer dress with a round neckline. “Thanks, Alice. I feel great and for the most part eat healthy.”

The older woman rubbed Kara’s upper arm. “It shows.”

After they got their luggage, the three went for the parking lot.

“My girlfriend, Bobbie, traded cars with me for the time you’re in town.

“You should’ve let us rent a car,” Jon put in.

“Don’t worry. Everything is fine.”

Their first stop was the auto body shop.

“Davey is looking forward to seeing you,” Kara explained. “Sandy is filling in for me while you’re in town so we’ll have that quality time we’d hoped for.”

Going inside, Sandy was the first to greet them, her little girl content in the baby swing, playing with her fingers.
