As we turned onto Juanita’s street, I saw that more of her neighbors were outside than had been on our previous visit. Working in their yards. Taking walks. Kids were shooting hoops in the driveway of one house. If we had time, it might be an excellent opportunity to talk to a few more of the neighbors.

This time our knock on the door was answered by a well-dressed woman in her early forties.

“Yes?”

We introduced ourselves, explained what we were doing, and asked if Juanita was at home.

“Yes, she’s here. It was very distressing when Paige died. For all of us on the street. Please. Come in.”

We followed her into the tidy and attractive living room.

“I’m Bryn, by the way.”

“Bryn, before we talk to Juanita, could I ask you if you remember Paige complaining of a stalker?” I asked.

“Sure. She was pretty frightened.”

Gina asked, “Did you ever see the stalker hanging around?”

Bryn didn’t answer immediately. Seconds ticked by before she said, “Once. But at a distance.”

“How would you describe him?” I asked.

She sighed. “Young. Probably no older than twenty-five. Blond. Tanned. Fairly tall, I think. I’m not really sure to be honest. Um, he had a tattoo on his upper arm.”

I said, “I know he was at a distance, but could you see what the tattoo was of?”

She shook her head. “No. But it wasn’t a sleeve tattoo. Just a medium sized one. Maybe kind of a round shape.”

“That’s very helpful, Bryn. Thank you.”

“I’ll get Juanita for you. She was just getting ready to go out.”

“Thank you, Bryn. We might want to run some photos by you after we talk with Juanita. Would that be okay?”

“Yeah. I can do that.”

A few minutes later, Juanita joined us, and Bryn left the room.

After we all said our hellos, Gina and I got down to business. Gina said, “Juanita, we have some pictures we’d like you to look at. If you see one that looks like it might be the stalker, please tell us.”

She nodded. “Okay.”

We sat on the couch, Juanita in the middle, and I placed the first photo of a shaggy-haired young man on the coffee table. Earlier, I noticed that Peggy had numbered the back of each picture, so I went in her order.

“No. That’s not him.”

We continued with the next two, getting the same response to each.

When I placed the fourth photo on the table, Juanita leaned closer to it.

“Maybe. But I’m not sure.”

The next photo appeared to be of the same young man but was a full-length shot.

“What about this one?” I asked.

She picked it up and peered at it for what felt like a long time.

“Maybe. Could be.”

“Good, you’re doing great, Juanita,” I said as I made notes in my small notebook. “Just a few more.”

She didn’t recognize any of the remaining photos.

Gina said, “One other thing, while we’re here. Do you happen to remember the name of a friend of Paige’s that might have been her best friend?”

“Yeah. The three of us went out together sometimes. Courtney Wright.
