Their own response developed fairly soon thereafter. A German chemist, Hofmann, who had been working on migraine medications derived from ergot fungi, appeared to have stumbled upon an extremely potent chemical, which produced a madness far more intense and incapacitating than the mysterious herbal smoke of the British, which they soon labelled Substance L.

As methodical as they were, the Germans procured a captured British officer to interview for their experiment. Major Chapman was brought into an interview, with full presence of mind and no alcohol, tobacco or other inebriant present. His interrogator was Major Czukay. As with all sophisticated, competent German officers, he had attended school in England or the US before the war and spoke fluent English.

“I have already told your people as much as I’m required to, Major.” Chapman was tall, polite, correct, and firm. He wore his uniform naturally.

“As is your duty, Major. We appreciate that, we respect that. I’m going to ask you some more general questions, ones with no security breach implications.”

“Ask your questions, Major, I am not afraid. But I cannot promise to answer.”

“As you wish. Do you English honestly expect to defeat our forces? To win this war? In between our forces in France, our submarine blockade, and our zeppelin air raids on London, surely Germany has the upper hand in this conflict. It’s merely a matter of time before you and your French allies ‘throw in the towel’, if I am using the expression correctly.”

“You are correct in its usage, but not in your analysis. Our own naval blockade of Germany is sure to bite just as hard. We can bomb your cities as well. And our Italian and Russian allies are sure to knock yourselves and the Austrians out of this war. Of that, I am completely and supremely confident.”

“Well then, we shall see, shall we?” Major Czukay concluded the interview, satisfied that Major Chapman was quite intelligent, quite determined, and had quite full control of his faculties.
