Maddie peeked out the cabin window. Her eyes flinched against the world of pristine white and the brightness of the early morning sun as it twinkled on the snow. The trees looked as if they’d been frosted with vanilla icing. As much as she hated the cold and the snow, she could still appreciate the beauty of the winter scene. Especially since the cabin was nice and toasty thanks to the fire Zeb built. It had been a shock he knew how.

She went to the kitchen and rummaged around the cupboards.

No food. Not even coffee. It hadn’t occurred to her to bring supplies. She’d been so focused on Zeb and the security at the concert that she’d forgotten about it. Good thing the town wasn’t far away. As soon as Zeb was up, she’d go in. She didn’t want to leave without letting him know.

He walked out of the bedroom. “Good morning.”

She stared, not quite believing what she was seeing. She finally found her voice. “Oh, my.”

He grinned. “That’s all you have to say?”

“I don’t know what else to say.”

“What do you think?” He rubbed his hands over his shaved head. His famous long brown locks were gone. There’d be no way to put feathers in his hair now. “I told you Johnny Rocker was gone.”

“Yes, you did. It’s a good look.”

“Thank you. Do you think anyone will even recognize me now?”

“Probably not. Is that why you did it? So you wouldn’t be recognized?”

“Partially. But I’m ready for that new chapter. My hair was the old chapter.”

“I was waiting for you to get up so I could tell you I need to go into to town to get supplies. In the rush of deciding to come here, I didn’t have time to get groceries.”

“With my new haircut, I think we can both go. Don’t you think?”

“The last time I took you somewhere it ended up as an autograph session.”

“Not this time. I promise.”

“I think it will be OK. But I can go without you if you don’t want to go. You’ll be safe here. There’re skis and snowshoes in the storage building if you want to go exploring.”

“You’d let me do that. Alone.”

“I don’t believe anyone followed us here.”

“Good to see you’re not as paranoid as I thought.”

“It’s not paranoia; it’s professionalism. We’ll use the four-wheel drive vehicle. It’s a lot safer on these roads than my little car.”

“What vehicle?”

“The one I keep up here.”

Behind the house stood a small free-standing garage built like a replica of the main cabin. “It’s one of the improvements I’ve made to the place. I didn’t like keeping my car out in the weather, and I needed some storage space.”

“And you made it look just like the cabin. Interesting.”

She laughed. “The contractor thought I was weird to spend the extra money, but I think it’s cute.”

“So very cute, Maddie Sweetheart.”

“Why can’t you just call me Maddie? Plain old Maddie.”

“Because there’s nothing plain about you. I find you quite fascinating.”

She ignored the compliment and focused the treacherous ground.
