Chapter 12
âI asked you a question. What are you doing?â
Gloria regained her balance, coming face-to-face with the scowling man.
âIâ¦uhâ¦Iâm one of the convention volunteers. Iâm making my rounds checking on attendees. I thought I heard a noise coming from the van.â
The dog inside the van began barking loudly.
Eleanor barreled around the corner. âThereâs a dog inside the van.â
âI cracked the window. Heâs fine. Besides, this is none of your business.â
âI should call animal control,â Eleanor snapped.
âTry it, you old hag.â
Gloria stepped between them. âWe didnât come here to pick a fightâ¦only to check on the guests.â
âYou have a funny way of showing it,â the man said. âIâm fine. The dogâs fine. You can leave now.â
âPerfect. Weâll be on our way Mrâ¦â
âMr. None of Your Business.â
Gloria bit back a smart reply. She grabbed Eleanorâs arm and they marched off the campsite.
âWhat a jerk,â Eleanor fumed. âWhatâs up with the dog in the van? Doesnât he know how dangerous it is to leave an animal inside a vehicle?â
âIf he hadnât shown up, I mightâve tried the van door. Itâs probably a good thing I didnât since Iâm thinking the dog possesses the same disposition as his owner,â Gloria said. âWhat was his lot number? I want to look him up later.â
Eleanor did an about-face. She hurried back to the site, took a quick look at the number on the post and ran back to where Gloria stood waiting. âEighteen.â
They stopped to answer a couple of questions before reaching the final cluster of campsites in the Neptune zone. The next van that matched the criteria â both in color and with a license plate containing either a three or eight, was empty. The vanâs doors were locked, and there was no one in sight.
âWe need to check this one out when we get back up front,â Eleanor waited for Gloria to join her.
âThree vans â all needing a little more investigating, including Penelope and Mr. None of Your Business.â
âWho deserves to be investigated because of his crappy attitude,â Eleanor said.
âI think itâs time to get down to business and do a little online digging around.â Gloria abruptly stopped. âEleanor, youâre brilliant.â
âI am? I mean, I am. What did I do?â
âOnline searches. If Iâm not mistaken, Ruth and the NASCA group have an online page and a website where they share tips and information.â
âWhich means we might be able to glean more information about the van owners by checking out their profiles,â Eleanor said.
âAnd social engagement.â Gloria picked up the pace, and they hurried back to the office.
Margaret and Ruth were already there. Dot and Lucy showed up moments later. âNo luck. There were two vans matching the suspectâs vehicle. One was empty, with no one around. The other was owned by a little old lady from Pasadena,â Lucy said.
âShe was from Madison, Wisconsin,â Dot chuckled. âDefinitely off the radar as a suspect.â
âAlthough Iâm almost certain she was secretly recording our conversation,â Lucy said. âWhat about you, Margaret?â
âEh.â Margaret lifted her hand and teetered it back and forth.
