After having yesterday off, I was back on duty and had just reported to the guard station on the second floor for my hall assignment when Fred and Brad joined me. Being in the same training group had left us with a lot of the same assignments and it would remain that way until one of us was promoted or the new batch of recruits was brought in.
âFred, my man. Why so glum?â I largely ignored the two idiots as a rule, but if something was tormenting poor Fred, well, I might need to get in on it. So I could repeat it later.
Nonchalantly, I pretended to be engrossed in my comm unit while my ears were primed to catch everything.
Fred finally answered Bradâs question. âShower duty. Weâre to report to the third floor and take any inmates who want one and watch them to make sure they donât do anything theyâre not supposed to.â
I was definitely on Team Fred at this pointâfor different reasons, Iâm sureâbut avoiding the third floor was still extremely high on my list of priorities. Like⦠at the top. Sexy Shock and Big Red were not good for my career. Not to mention yesterdayâs dalliance in the coat closet, er spacesuit closet? Hmm⦠didnât matter, the point was⦠Actually, I probably didnât have one of those either, I was just a shameless hussy.
âCO Greshem. Earth to Alie. Hellloooo in there!â I snapped out of my rambling thoughts and smacked Fredâs hand down from in front of my face.
âKeep your fingers out of my face unless you want to lose one. Thatâs rude.â Idiot had poked me in the forehead.
âSorry, I called your name.â He did look contrite so I let it go and spun my finger in the âget on with itâ swirly motion. âYouâre on shower duty with us. Youâve been up there a couple times and we thought you might have a preference on who you got. There arenât many females in this prison so youâll have to do some of the guys too.â
The bad news was that I had to go to the third floor. The good news was that I could use this opportunity to avoid Satan and Vern while simultaneously getting Fred back for poking me. He wouldnât be poking anyone in the face ever again. I was pretty sure my face was nearly purple as I tried to restrain my glee.
âHow about we split it. Iâll take the east portion of the hall to say⦠two-thirds of the way down? Except for Ee-oo, you can have him, Fred. Heâs the easiest to handle and since youâre dreading it so much itâll make it less stressful on you.â The guard at the desk snorted but shut her trap when I glared at her. I might have laid it on a bit thick but I wasnât having her ruin my fun.
âHey, thatâs not fair! I want the easy one.â Bradâs pouting sealed the deal, and Fred refused to give Ee-oo up.
âYou can have him next time, Brad,â I consoled the grumpy man.
