“The man who will whup me will be fast, strong, and hasn’t been born yet.”

My father said this to a reporter after winning the world title on February 25, 1964, when he was asked how long he expected to wear the championship belt.

“I AM AMERICA. I am the part you won’t recognize. But get used to me. Black, confident, cocky; my name, not yours; my religion, not yours; my goals, my own; get used to me.”

My father said these inspiring words in 1970 so that all people of all ages would take pride in their identity and be true to who they were, as he was. This quote had a profound influence on many African Americans, from basketball star Lew Alcindor, who would change his name to Kareem Abdul-Jabbar in 1971, to future president Barack Obama, who recited it while paying tribute to my father after he passed in June 2016.
