Bryson studied his coworkersâ faces after the skierâs claim of murder. Faithâs open mouth gave away her shock, while Ramsayâs flattened lips revealed another story. Was he angry because of the senseless man-made avalanche or because he was involved and wanted to keep whatever evil deed happening in their mountains a secret? Either way, Bryson wanted to see this cave without their prying eyes. He had to get them off the mountain.
Forty minutes later, after the coroner removed the body, Bryson approached his coworker. âChris, can you and Faith take the skier back to the chalet and get him checked out?â
âWhat are you going to do?â Ramsay straightened his arms at his side.
His reaction told Bryson it wouldnât be easy to get around the manâs suspicions. âJayla and I will ensure the area is safe. Make sure no other victims were buried.â He left out the part about exploring the cave. Would he buy it?
Ramsay shifted his eyes to stare at Jayla before turning back to Bryson, inching closer. âYou have a crush on her, donât you?â
Thatâs where he went? Well, Bryson could admit that he admired the mountain survivalist, but right now, finding those responsible for another avalanche was his number one priority. âI need her and Hercâs expertise. Please make sure no one else comes up the mountain until we know more. Got it?â
âWhat are you hiding?â Ramsay poked him in the chest. âYou still suspect someone sabotaged the mountain? The skier is wrong. His fiancéeâs death has him imagining what really happened.â
Or you want us to think that.
âPerhaps.â Bryson stepped back into his skis. âBut remember, someone shot at us earlier. Somethingâs fishy, and I just want to make sure.â
âDonât come up with more conspiracy ideas. You know Thamesford wouldnât like you interfering in something that doesnât exist and putting our station at risk.â He walked over to Faith and the male skier. âLetâs head out.â
What? Had his leader told Ramsay about Bryson looking into the avalanches? Mistrust once again prickled the back of Brysonâs neck.
Jayla skied up to Brysonâs location. âWhat was that about?â
âNot entirely sure. I donât trust Ramsay. Somethingâs off with him.â Bryson looped his pole straps around his wrists. âLetâs go look for this supposed cave. Hard to say if weâll find anything, since the skier said they set off dynamite.â
âIâll follow you.â She turned to her dog. âHercules, come.â
After searching for thirty minutes, Bryson stopped near a group of spruce trees and waited for Jayla.
She skied up to him and lowered her goggles. âReady to give up?â
âIs Hercules trained in detecting explosives?â he asked.
âNo. Just search and rescue, plus some protective skills I trained him on.â Jayla rubbed the K-9âs back. âYou were hoping heâd smell the dynamite?â
Bryson took off his helmet and scratched the top of his head. âYes. I want to find that cave. I believe the skier. It has to be around here somewhere. What are we missing?â
âListen, I know youâre frustrated. Maybe we should call it a day.
