Itâs seven oâclock on Saturday morning when I enter studio B at my ballet academy. Kevin is already here. He sits on the floor with his legs straight out in front of him and his toes pointing up to the ceiling. He looks up when he hears the door shutting. âHey,â I say.
âYouâre late.â
I look at the clock on the wall. âNo. Itâs seven oâclock.â
âExactly.â
OK. I guess next time I have to be here earlier than what he tells me. I pull my sweater over my head and place it in the corner of the room along with my bag. I start to put on my pointe shoes when Kevin tells me we wonât be using them today. âBarefoot for the Modern Dance class. Iâm sure youâll pass the ballet class. Iâm not sure about the Modern,â he says, standing up and messing with his iPod. âYouâll only perform your solo if you pass your Modern technique. So thatâs where weâre going to start.â
I do my best to concentrate and for the most part I do pretty well. If it wasnât for Max coming in and out of my mind, Iâd be able to pay attention to Kevinâs every word. From my bedroom window last night, I saw Max come home from his hockey practice and then I saw him leaving. A girl came to pick him up. I couldnât see her well from my window, but I saw the long black hair, and Iâm certain itâs the same girl I saw kissing him the first time I met him. I waited to see him come home but I fell asleep before eleven. I was so tired and I was sad. Sad makes me cry, crying puts me to sleep.
âYouâre moving rigorously through space with attention to rhythm and changes of direction. Now you need to focus on your level changes,â Kevin says and he seems pleased. Good, because Iâm tired of disappointing him and myself this week. Iâve been having problems with the choreography he suggested. Iâll have to work on that.
I get home from my class this morning with one hour to get ready to go out with Ryan. I change my clothes for the third time, pulling my jeans back up. I want to wear my sweater dress, but since I donât know where weâre going, I opted for jeans, a long-sleeve brown tee, and an off-white sweater. I zip up my furry boots and look in the mirror one more time. I breathe in slowly and let the air out through my mouth. My stomach rumbles, making me nervous. Not because Iâm going out with Ryan, and not because heâll be here any minute to meet my father, but because I donât want Max to see the whole scene. Heâd think this is a date, and I donât want him to think that.
I have barely seen Max this week. Heâs got his dadâs car now and doesnât need me to drive him anymore. His hockey practices started and by the time he gets home, Iâm already in my bedroom.
