Sunday afternoon, Jessica stood in front of the bathroom mirror staring at her lip. The bruise had faded, but the cut was still there. She applied a heavy amount of foundation on her mouth, and then covered it with a dark shade of lipstick.

“Jessica? Gavin’s here,” Grace said, pushing the door open.

She continued to stare at herself in the mirror. “Grace? Can you tell?”

She stood behind her and looked at her reflection. “No, sweetheart.”

Gavin was in the living room with Ryan when she walked in. “Thank you for letting me have him today. You don’t know how much I appreciate this.”

She hid behind her smile. “You two have a good time.”

“How have you been?”

“Well, I guess I’ve been better,” she said, trying to laugh.

He shook his head. That had come out wrong. “Is there anything I can do to help?”

“No, but I’ll be all right,” she replied, hoping she sounded confident.

He switched Ryan to his other arm. “Jessica, do you mind if I ask you a personal question?”

“You want to know why I left him,” she stated.

His face flushed.

She sat down on the sofa and folded her hands in her lap.

“Was it because of what happened at the party?”

“This has been coming for a long time. The party just brought it all to a head,” she said softly.

Gavin started to say something but stopped.

“What?”

“I know this is the last thing you need to hear right now, but some people at the hospital, my ex-wife included, think that you and I are seeing each other again.”

She sighed.

“I didn’t mean to upset you. I just thought you should know before you went back to work.”
