Verses 1-3 of this psalm utilize a variety of verbs and images to help us imagine God’s intimate knowledge of us. Which word or phrase from these verses resonates with you? Why?

This is not just knowledge; this is intimate knowledge!

Note especially the language of probing and sifting. The psalmist wants us to know that God does not know us in a static way, as though he creates us, takes one look at us, and knows us once and for all. Rather, God is actively knowing us. This is a dynamic relationship, one in which God is constantly searching our hearts, sifting our intentions, probing us in order to know us. This probing and sifting allows God to know us so well that he knows us in the past, present, and even the future: “even before a word is on my tongue.”
