CHAPTER 28

The four ex-cons had just reached the end of the narrow path. It opened into a clearing, from where one could see the cabin one hundred yards away. Stick, so named because he was beanpole thin, was in the lead. Suddenly, he hit the brakes.

“WHAT THE H___?”

The bikers behind him slid to a stop.

“What is it?” asked the one in the back.

“BEARS!”

A protective mother bear and three cubs had just crossed about thirty feet in front of Stick. It stopped, faced him, rose on its hind legs, and began to growl.

“GUYS…YOU BEST MAKE A LOT OF NOISE OR WE’RE GOING TO BE LUNCH!”

The four ex-cons revved their engines and began to yell. Confused by the sound, the bear turned and began to lumber into the clearing, her three cubs struggling to keep up.

They bounded to the far side of the cabin and through the open door of a weathered barn, a couple hundred feet away.

“Well, that was close,” Stick said as he motioned for the others to follow him to the cabin. Three minutes later, they pulled in front and shut off their engines.
