TWENTY-ONE

Russel arrived and left at the perfect time. He’d been there long enough to pepper Iris with a thousand prying questions, gathering answers Lincoln was too gutless to ask.

He discovered Iris was all in—not a surprise. This was a woman who bought a seventy-five-pound bag of kibble after spending ten minutes with a dog. She gave too much, too easily, and that trust left her exposed. What began as a living arrangement had morphed into a relationship—one with cracks, and he was the broken half. Lincoln needed to figure out how to protect her from the fallout that would soon descend. In a town this size, that was nearly impossible.

A meeting with Seth to discuss food truck options was long overdue, and the short drive to Whitewater Homes tied his gut in knots. He’d made a last-ditch effort to find another spot for his restaurant, but that came up dry, and he committed to the mobile pizza place. That option guaranteed a steady cash flow while he opened Cascade Cannabis. And with the paperwork approved, he’d already started lining up suppliers of edibles, functional glass, and weed.

Seth’s wife, Natalie, glanced from her computer to the window when he crossed in front of Whitewater’s office. She waved him in with a sunny smile. “Hi, Lincoln. Give me a minute and I’ll find Seth. He’s somewhere in the shop, working on a tiny home. And you’re in luck, Wade and Ravenna are in Ashwood this week. You can nail down plans for your grand opening at Mosquito Creek Taproom.”

“Great. Two birds.” He nodded and took a seat in the office. Natalie’s enthusiasm didn’t cure how fucked up this felt.

“Help yourself to water or a soda. I’ll be right back,” she said on her way out. Seth’s wife, also a relative newcomer to the small town, blended into Ashwood easily. It helped that she was married to one of the Michaels, and that her amazing landscape photography hung in half the homes in town.

Seth, Natalie, Wade, and Ravenna piled into the office, shrinking the space, and raising Lincoln’s heartrate. The first part of the meeting covered details for the food truck. After he signed off on the final plans, Seth lifted from his seat, opened the top desk drawer, and tossed Lincoln’s check inside. Air hammers rung from the shop and he glanced toward the door.

“Gotta get back to it, so I’ll leave you to your details. Stop by anytime to check on the progress. And let me know when you want to start demo.” Excitement glinted Seth’s eyes.

Lincoln nodded, but didn’t share the same zeal for tearing out the walls at his pizza place. The first whack of his sledgehammer would launch talk all over Ashwood, and his time with Iris was bound to come to a swift, painful end.

“Will do, thanks.” He exchanged a quick nod with Seth as he left. As if attached by an invisible string, Natalie rose and followed. “I’ve got hours of work in my darkroom,” she added on her way out.
