Chapter Nine

I stood on the steps to the sheriff’s department as I watched the crowd gathering in front of me, and everyone glanced at each other with strange looks of half-recognition. The sun stood high overhead, and I was surprised it was only noon. It felt like days had passed in the chaos of the last few hours, but that meant we still had a lot of daylight on our side to figure out our next steps.

Jess had gotten her prison break just like she’d wanted, and while it didn’t look like a typical rescue mission, a success was a success.

“What’s going on?”

“Where are we?”

“I feel like I know you, but I don’t...”

The whispers sweeping through the growing crowd were all along the same thread, and I waved my arms over my head to get everyone’s attention. Jess and Rick noticed I was about to speak, and they stepped to the side to give the people who’d been trapped in the wall-free prison full view of me as I talked.

“Hello! I know this is all very confusing and strange, but I can do my best to explain.” I paused to scan the faces in the crowd, and when most were turned to me, I continued. “Many of you may already know who the NSS are, and others may have been unaware of who was responsible when you were captured, but long story short, you’ve been imprisoned here by the use of a hallucinogenic aerosol.”

The shocked and scared sounds swept through the crowd like a wave, and I waited until the murmurs and cries died down before I carried on with my impromptu speech.

“My name is Adam, and my sister and I came to destroy this prison.” I gestured around at the town. “The NSS are our enemies, and our goal is to tear down the entire organization. None of you owe us anything for our help here, and we will stick around to make sure everyone is taken care of, but we can’t stay forever.”

“The hallucinogen suppressed our memories?” someone asked.

“What else did it do to our bodies?” another added.

Both were good questions, and I wasn’t a scientist or doctor, so the answer didn’t come easily to me. I wished Myers was with us to give all the freed prisoners exams, and maybe the doctor could figure out how the mist worked to create the mass hallucination. The way the prisoners all worked together to make sure newcomers succumbed to the delusion seemed predesigned, and it seemed like the people suffering from the hallucinations reinforced each other’s delusions. I knew confirmation bias could be a bitch, but this situation was a little extreme for that to be the only answer.

Myers would also be able to determine ways to help the freed prisoners regain their memories, but it seemed to me like their brains had jumped back to the moment they were first captured. That could be from the shock to their system caused by the sudden shutoff, and some may get their memories back naturally.
