Conversations flowed around them causing a continuous din, but Sam looked at Cody and mouthed "Now what?"
In response, he took her hand and held it. "I don't know. I'd like to figure out why they decided to come here. She doesn't live anywhere close to here."
"Perhaps she's trying to keep her meeting with him secret. Do you recognize him?"
Using his phone as a ploy, he checked the reflection on the screen. "No. I don't think I've ever seen him before."
"Well, that doesn't help us. Any thoughts?"
"I don't think Liz is too worried about being seen with him. We're only two blocks or so from where Elena and Ian live."
Sam speared a piece of penne and thought about that new piece of information. "You're right. If she was trying to have a clandestine meet up with somebody, doing it a block from your wife's brother isn't the smartest option. So, conclusion number one, she's not trying to hide."
"So much for finding something there to help," Cody muttered.
"We're not out of luck yet. Think about it, Cody. We both felt that the odds of her coming in here now were slim. You actually said it felt designed. What if it is?"
"I'm not following you, Sam. I know you're circling around something so what is it?"
"What if she knows something about what you're trying to track down and is giving you a lead?"
Cody sat motionless, the piece of garlic bread hanging from his fingers. "Why? What would that give her?"
Sam knocked her spoon to the floor giving her a chance to move her wheelchair and reposition herself for a better view of the couple in question.
Liz sat at the table, her hands folded in her lap, her mouth in a tight line while her companion talked animatedly.
"I don't think she's with him for fun. It seems like he's boring her to death."
Cody frowned. "If he's so boring, why would she be here with him?"
"Have we heard back from your PI yet?"
"Whoa. Interesting segue. Perhaps you could use the clutch next time," Cody said with a shake of his head.
"Sorry. I'm just thinking...what if you're not the only one being threatened?"
"Blackmail?" Cody pondered it for a moment. "It's possible I suppose, but why?"
Sam shrugged. That's a question I can't even guess at. But perhaps after Daniels gets the financials, we might have a better answer."
"You're thinking the whole thing is not someone merely siphoning money from the accounts. They're trying to destroy the entire company?"
"I don't know about the entire company, but if it is blackmail, they're focusing on several of the key players."
"Again, possible. But how would we ever prove it? The bigger problem is we went from a suspect list of nine to an unknown group."
"True," Sam conceded. "But if we go back to the idea that Liz coming here was designed, what does that tell us? Why did she come to this place?"
"If she's keeping track of me, she followed me here."
"How would she be keeping track of you? Your phone is currently with the sheriff, so she didn't follow that.
