CHAPTER

NINETEEN

KENZIE

I smiled wide as Mason pulled up in a sleek black Lamborghini Urus SUV, looking all badass. I tried to match his outfit the best I could by wearing my thick gray cable-knit sweater over black leggings. My calf-height boots were the same color as my sweater. My hair was down in loose curls under a gray winter cap with a white and gray puff ball on top.

I slid into the passenger side, pleased to feel that the seats were heated. Mason leaned over to kiss me in greeting.

“You look stunning, as usual,” he said before straightening in his seat and putting the car into drive.

“Will you put the address into the GPS?” he asked.

“I know where we are going.”

“Of course you do,” he teased.

“How was your afternoon?” I asked sweetly, fully aware of how it had gone, and I was proud of my thinking on the fly.

“Oh, you know,” he started, reaching over to thread his fingers with mine. “I had the most beautiful woman help me relieve some week-old pent-up stress in a very exhilarating way.”

“Wow. She sounds great.” My smile was ear to ear.

“She has no idea just how much,” he answered before kissing the back of my hand. My heart soared at our new-found closeness. I loved seeing the sweet side of Mason, and he was really trying to let that side of him show more often.

I knew he had been worried after he came to my place after the whole Snow White problem, and I had asked for some time. It took me a week to really understand not only what I was feeling but also what I wanted and deserved. I landed on not letting Mason slip through my fingers. We had a hurdle named Alice to get over, but what we had was worth the risk. It honestly felt as though we were made for one another. We fit so well together in more ways than one.

We arrived at the school a little after the reunion had started. I was anxious to see a lot of people, knowing they would talk about my sister, but I needed to face it. I was also sent a letter saying that her memory would be honored during the party. I knew Mason would be the best person to be there with me.

We walked into the gym with my arm wrapped around his. The music was loud, but everyone was in different clusters around the room. Food was set up by the far wall, and the space was decorated with balloons sporting our school colors, mascot, and name. The aesthetic was sorely lacking, but who was I to judge? This was my first time attending a reunion.

Mason and I received inquisitive looks from a handful of people as we made our way through the gym. I figured it was a mix between Mason looking like a god and that I was the one with the dead sister that would be honored that night. Ok, I was trying to not be so sensitive about it, but it was a big deal that Amanda was being honored.
