Chapter 17

Amy

“Amy! Aren’t you late for class?” Isabella’s voice woke me up from a deep sleep. Shit! I jumped up, looked at my watch and rushed to the bathroom. I’d overslept again. I had been up late, studying, getting to bed only a few hours ago. It had been a couple of days of hard cramming for me as the end of term tests approached. Even though I’d worked hard, I was still nervous. There was no time for a shower, I pulled on some clean clothes, brushed my teeth, and ran to make it to class.

I was looking forward to seeing Professor Cross today, or rather Christopher, as he was encouraging me to call him now. He teased me about the fact that I still called him by his title. I had once done this in front of his mother and since then, I’d tried calling him by his name. In my mind, though, he was still Professor Cross.

We’d not had any contact since my text message cancelling our date on Sunday. I had been waiting for him to contact me but that had not happened. But I had the exams coming up and instead I’d thrown myself into my books. I did wonder occasionally if I’d overreacted on Sunday. I wasn’t usually moody and maybe it was hormonal or something? Or nerves because of my exams. Whatever it was, it seemed to have passed. I was looking forward to seeing him.

But when I arrived at class, there was a strange man in the front of the lecture room. “Hi everyone, Professor Cross is ill today, I’ll be standing in for him today. I’m Tim Gerritsen, one of the departmental tutors.”

Where was Professor Cross? What was the matter with him? I could think of little else throughout the class. Even though Tim handed out our assignments, and I had gotten an A, I worried about Professor Cross and if he was really ill. Could that be why I hadn’t heard from him? Was he in hospital all alone? Lying unconscious on his living room floor? All sorts of terrible thoughts passed through my head.

I waited to speak to Tim after class, but I had to wait in line as other students had questions about their assignments or what to study for our big test the following week. “I don’t understand this comment,” whined Mark Lowell, waving his assignment at Tim who had to explain what Professor Cross meant and ended up recommending making an appointment to see him later.

As soon as he was free, I approached Tim. I had to think quickly of a reason to ask after Christopher.

“Hi, I’m Amy, Professor Cross said he was going to give me some notes today? Any idea where he is?”

Tim looked at me and frowned. “He didn’t say anything. I don’t know, something came up, a medical thing, I think?”

I thought of him all day long. My classes finished up early and I decided to go over to his house to check on him.
