Chapter 7

Everyone got back into their vehicles or choppers, and I heard James radio the Special Forces teams.

“SF1 and SF2, this is Silent Death, acknowledge, over.” Silent Death was James’s call sign.

“Silent Death, this is SF1. Acknowledge.”

“Silent Death, this is SF2. Acknowledge.”

“SF1 and SF2. Silent Death. Mission order to follow. Proceed to the following grid coordinates.” James rattled off a lengthy stretch of letters and numbers that corresponded with a precise location on their maps. “Destroy radio comms and tower at that location. You have one hour. Advise when mission completed,” he told the two team leaders.

“SF1, Roger.”

“SF2, Roger.”

“All strike force units, Silent Death. We will commence operations in one hour from my mark. You know your assignments. Nobody gets away. Take prisoners where possible, but don’t risk your men unnecessarily.” James paused. “Mark. Good luck, guys. Let’s round up this trash.”

It seemed like my watch suddenly stopped working. I kept glancing at it, but every minute seemed like ten. Eventually, we heard some gunfire and an explosion coming from town.

“Silent Death, SF1, enemy comms have been taken out,” I heard the Special Forces leader inform James.

James immediately got back on the radio. “Badger One and Two. Attack in exactly three minutes. First and second armor proceed. Western units set up a blocking force, and send a platoon into town.”

I ordered the forces with me into town as well, and as we started moving, I heard multiple explosions, and black smoke began rising into the air above the town.

“Eagle One, Silent Death. All three strong points have been destroyed.”

Eagle One was me. We had long been in the habit of referring to ourselves by the call signs of Eagle One, Eagle Two, etc. Whoever was leading the mission would be Eagle One.

“Eagle One acknowledges, Silent Death. Eagle One out.”

As we sped towards town we passed where, just a few minutes ago, a squad of men had been set up to stop us from reaching town. All that was left now was four big holes in the road.

I could hear the sounds of tank cannons and the explosions of what I assumed were RPGs. Jeff moved the M-60 tank to the front of the column. I wanted our heaviest armor at the lead. I wished it wasn’t my brother commanding it, but he refused to do anything less. I prayed that he didn’t get hit by one of those Javelin missiles, they would tear that tank to pieces.

“Charlie, you and Medusa get off the main road. Get on the side street and try to thin out the less armored troops. That AIL is a death trap in town,” I shouted into the radio. I should never have let her talk me into letting her bring it. With very limited armor, and only in the bottom, anything they encountered was a huge risk. “Eagle Two, Greg, go with her. If it’s too risky, order her to abandon it and get into the Stryker. In fact, Charlie, park that and join Greg. It’s far too dangerous,” I ordered her.
