Hypothetical questions

These questions open the mind to new possibilities.

What if you were to . . .?

What would be the consequences if. . .?

How would you feel about. . .?

Useful for testing people’s position on an issue, or their commitment to a course of action, but beware, these questions can allow job applicants to impress with what they might have done, instead of what they did do. They can also turn into leading questions (see page 69).

Link questions

Questions which seek to understand the connection between ideas and events.

So, if you say you cannot do . . . what will that mean for . . .?

How will you . . . if. . .?

You say you do this, and that this often happens . . . Are these two things connected?

These are good for prompting new understanding and helping someone explore cause and effect.
