Becoming the Law

What was the ultimate purpose of the whole, vast drama? An affirmation in the readings suggested the answer. The final goal of the soul, as seen in this counsel, was not simple obedience, the classic motif of so much Western faith, though obedience to the laws of existence was learned in life after life. In the language of Cayce's readings, the goal was not just "keeping the law" but "becoming the law." Each of us was beckoned to grow toward responding lovingly, wisely, justly to life's predicaments and challenges, becoming not simply well-behaved persons but persons of stature, on fire with such love as the Christ had known.

Three dimensions of lasting soul gains had emerged in these readings: a co-creating life-style supported by covenants and self-training. Giving flesh to them were three kinds of karma: talents, texture, and opportunities. It was time now to explore how these strands were woven in one illuminating case: the past and present of Edgar Cayce.
