Chapter 19
Our marriage was clearly over, but we didnât have the money to proceed with divorce.
Bo requested a job transfer to be closer, and the next thing I knew he was on his way. His move was bittersweet because, although I had kept my part of the bargain with the elders, I was living in sin if I continued a relationship with him while still legally married.
Several more months went by before Pastor John gave me the ultimatum to divorce Michael immediately or never see Bo again. Ending a relationship with someone who cared about me in exchange for someone who didnât made no sense to me. How could this be Godâs will for me? Was He a judgmental God who found joy in seeing me suffer? It just didnât seem right. After all, He was the Father who played ball with me in the middle of His throne room and lovingly sat me upon His knee.
I pleaded with Pastor John to hear my heart in the matter. I was taking steps and, while they were small, I was still moving forward. I shared the warnings I had in the dream (âBeware of skipping a step, for you surely will fall,â and âDo not listen to those who would have you miss a step, no matter what they sayâ), but he didnât listen, remaining firm that the relationship needed to end or I would be excommunicated.
âPlease, John, not Matthew 18 again,â I pleaded. I was so close. If only he would give me more time.
When I told Bo, he was furious. He arranged to speak with Pastor John and Pastor Lyndon, one of the younger members of the pastoral staff. Bo, though not denying the relationship as sinful according to the Bible, asked for grace and compassion as we made the situation right before God over time. He also appealed on my behalf, stating he felt an excommunication would be detrimental to my spiritual well-being.
His requests were met with opposition. They held fast to the Scripture that pertained to âthe appearance of evilâ that could not be overlooked. As far as my spiritual well-being, they felt that was my choice since I was refusing to follow the authority of their counsel. Their conclusion remained the same: either all communication was to end or I was to be shunned.
I tried speaking with Pastor John one more time, but to my dismay, he not only used my relationship with Bo in their reasoning but brought up a whole list of things they felt I had refused to do in compliance with their instructions. He pointed out that I continued in relationships with my coven members and went to rituals.
Of course I still went to rituals. Had he forgotten the reason I came back to church was to find out who Jesus was? Iâd never promised to stop attending rituals, and I certainly had no intention of turning my back on my coven. When did this become a requirement? After all, He was the one who told me to come back to church; I only told him about Jesus showing up in my dream.
