Anna sat in the parlor next to Momma.

Daddy stood behind a chair, his expression worried.

“What is it you have to tell me?” he asked.

Anna tapped her hands together nervously. How had she let this happen?

She’d always been the responsible one.

The one who made her parents proud.

Now she had wrecked that. She had wrecked everything.

“Jonathan,” Momma said. “Please sit down. You’re making Anna nervous.”

Daddy did as she asked.

He sat in a chair across from them and looked from one to the other.

Anna was pretty sure they were making him more nervous than he was making them.

Anna and Momma had talked about how they would tell him. Momma assured her that he would understand. That it wasn’t Anna’s fault.

Momma went first, just like they’d planned.

“My love,” she said. “Remember the spell?”

Jonathan ran a hand through his hair. Of course he remembered.

“Well,” Momma continued. She reached over and squeezed Anna’s hand. “Anna, child of my blood, has traveled back in time.”

Daddy looked right at Momma. Anna saw no surprise. Just a weariness around his eyes.

“She was safe in New York,” he said.

“Maybe.”

Anna glanced sharply at her mother, but Momma kept whatever thought she had to herself.

Jonathan looked at Anna, his eyes kind now. Sympathetic even. “Where—when—did you go?”

Her mouth dry, Anna swallowed. “1815.”

Daddy blew out a breath. Closed his eyes momentarily before looking back at Momma.

“Have you been to that time?”

“No,” Momma said.

“Daddy,” Anna said. “there’s more.”

She saw Daddy brace himself and the last thing she wanted to do was to cause her father more pain.

But he needed to know.

She needed to make her arrangements. And he would be part of them.

“Daddy,” she said, leaning forward. She’d told Momma about Zachary and talking about him had been surreal. As though she’d been telling them about a dream she’d had.

She took a deep breath and kept going. “I met a man named Zachary.” She continued quickly at the shadow that crossed Daddy’s features. “He helped me.”

Daddy waited. Watching her.

Anna wondered what he must be feeling. He must be feeling helpless. Zachary—any boy—in another time was outside his reach.

She held out the marriage certificate and he took it in his hands. Adjust his glasses and began to read.

Anna didn’t know if this was going to make things worse for Daddy or better.

“We got married, Daddy,” she said, trying to smile. This should be such happy news.

Daddy took off his glasses and handed the certificate back to her.

She held it close to her chest.

“Congratulations,” he said. “I hope I get to meet Zachary some day.”

Momma squeezed her hand. “Go ahead,” she said. “Tell him.”

Anna took a deep breath, feeling a rush of so many conflicting emotions.

“Daddy,” she said, running a hand over her flat abdomen.

“I’m pregnant.”
