Thursday 12 June (9 days to go!!!)
âMy bandages come off at lunchtime and Iâll look lovely. You wonât recognize me!â I tell Jamie.
Weâre at a small wooden coffee shop tucked away in the Hollywood Hills, roughly half-way between my house and the Raiders clubhouse. Weâre here because weâve called a meeting to work out what to do about the situation with my father.
âYour dad is lovely,â says Jamie. âI really like him â I think heâs a thoroughly decent person. Iâm so relieved.â
âYes, heâs nice, isnât he?â I say, feeling all tingly inside.
âI was quite worried in some ways,â confesses Jamie. âI mean, if heâd been horrible I think Iâd have ended up belting him because no oneâs going to upset you or use you, or make you miserable again. Not if I can help it.â
âThank you,â I say, touched. âThat means a lot.â
âNancyânâNell,â he says, with a raise of his glass, and we drink and we smile. Then I remember.
âBut I canât play tennis.â
âNo, and I canât pretend to be Dean for much longer either, but I think weâre going to have to just this once, then the next time weâd better front up and tell him the truth. Iâm sure heâll see the funny side of it.â
âYeah, I guess,â I say, unsure. It feels wrong to pretend another man is my husband. Like Iâm being unfaithful or something.
He smiles, and we both look out at the long trucks pulling up on the forecourt as the drivers come in for huge American breakfasts.
âDo you want anything to eat?â he asks, seeing a waitress walk by with plates of pancakes and waffles.
âNo, silly,â I shudder. There must be enough calories in that lot to feed an army. âIâd better head off in a minute. I promised Simon Iâd go down to the club.â
âOK, sweetheart. Youâre very special, you know.â Jamie reaches over and holds my hand so delicately I feel like crying. âAnd you have such beautiful hands. Do you mind if I photograph them â for my portfolio? Say if you do. Iâm just trying to build it up, and add to it whenever I see something truly beautiful.â
âIâd be honoured,â I say. âThen when youâre a world-famous photographer my hands will be talked about all over the world.â
Jamie snaps away, holding my fingers gently as he moves them across the table, catching light and avoiding shadows.
I look down at my bright pink six-inch talons and I have to agree with him. The eye-watering contrast between the flame-orange of my skin and the pinky-purple acrylic nail can only be accurately summed up by the word âbeautifulâ.
âThanks,â he says. âI just figure that if I take a few every day Iâll soon have a portfolio to be proud of.â
1.30 p.m.
âWhat do I look like?â I say to Dr Johns. Iâm so excited, I can hardly breathe.
âWell, itâs still a bit red, and will be sore for a couple of days, but itâll be fine. Itâs worked well. I think youâll be very pleased.
