TORI PLUNGED THE PADDLE into the steaming water, stirring the clothing, her mind churning as much as the wash. Her gaze wandered to the horizon, scanning as far as she could see in each direction.
When would Ezra return? Today made the fifth day heâd been gone. Mara hadnât said how long he planned to be away, but surely this was too long. Should they go look for him? She glanced toward the road the stage coaches took, then at the sky. The weather had been bright, if cold, for days now, so it couldnât be snow delaying him.
Had he been accosted on the trail? Or worse, what if heâd been killed? What if heâd been mixed up in another barroom brawl, and this time the bullet did more than graze his arm?
Her stomach swam with the images, with the thought of Ezra wounded and in pain, lying in the street or on the trail with no one there to tend him.
She scooped the gowns from the wash water and laid them in the clean bucket to cool. With a shove, she dumped the pail of suds over her heating fire, then scooped up the container of clean dresses and charged toward Ezraâs cabin.
She was done waiting and stewing. If Ezra needed her, it was time to find him.
Opal stirred a pot of soup at the stove, the savory aromas drifting through the cabin.
Tori plopped the bucket of soggy clothing by the door to her room. âIâm gonna ride to Maraâs. Somethingâs wrong with Ezra, and I need to see where to start looking for him.â
Her cousin dropped the wooden spoon onto the stoveâs surface. âWhere is he? Did he send word?â
âNo, but I can feel it. Somethingâs wrong.â Toriâs mind spun as she stepped into the bedroom and grabbed her satchel, then the only other clean, dry dress she had here. What would she need to take on the trail? Food for sure, and blankets. Feed for the horse. Matches to start a fire.
She grabbed the handles of her bag, then snatched up two quilts from the trunk at the base of the bed.
âTori, youâre not planning to go look for him, are you?â
Opal stood in the doorway with hands on her hips, blocking her exit.
âYes.â She pushed past her cousin. âIâm going to Maraâs first to find out exactly where he was planning to go. Iâll see if Mara can come over here with you during the day to take telegraph messages. Then you ride back with her at night.â She paused, then spun on her heel to face Opal. âDo not sleep here alone, do you hear?â
Opalâs honey-colored brows raised. âSo, youâre going to sleep out on a trail where any savage or criminal can stumble across you, but Iâm not allowed to stay in a perfectly safe cabin with a locking door?â
She bit back a growl then did her best to temper her tone. âPlease, Opal. I canât worry about you, too. Sleep at Maraâs. Thereâs no need for you to stay here overnight.
