After Daniel, Luna and Caleb have disappeared into the pub, I slip my feet out of my sandals and sit, for a moment, with my bare feet on the cool grass. Itâs gorgeous out here, drinking wine in the sunshine. Birds are twittering in a nearby tree thatâs casting shadows across the grass and a Dalmatian is lapping water from a bowl near the door. All around me are couples, groups of friends and families, laughing and relaxing on a late Sunday afternoon.
A wave of heartbreaking loneliness suddenly sweeps over me. I get up quickly, push my feet back into my shoes and hurry over to Callie before Iâm engulfed.
âHey, Flora. Did you open the shop today?â Callie gives me a beaming smile and pushes her wavy blonde hair over her shoulder. âIf youâd let me know, Iâd have come in to give you a hand when I finished at the coffee shop. I only went for a picnic with Noah afterwards.â
âNo, I didnât want to intrude on your time together.â I smile at her handsome, square-jawed boyfriend, who grins back. âWhen do you start your new job in Oxford, Noah?â
âTomorrow. This is my last day of freedom.â
âAh, good luck. And what about you, Stanley? How are you?â
âIâm sick,â says Stanley, pulling at the beads around his neck.
âOh, Iâm sorry to hear that.â
Callie rests her hand on my arm. âHeâs absolutely fine. He means sick as in âgreatâ. Itâs his favourite slang word at the moment.â
âOnly one of my favourites,â insists Stanley, rustling about in his shell suit. âAlong with âwickedâ, âsaltyâ and âgoatâ.â
âGoat?â
Stanley shakes his head. âShort for âgreatest of all timeâ. Honestly, Flora, Iâd have thought youâd know that, what with you being such a young âun.â
âTalking of young,â butts in Noah, his pale blue eyes twinkling, âdid you know that Stanley has decided that dance is his latest passion and a good way of staying young and supple? Heâs looking into doing ballet classes.â
âUm, I didnât realise that. No.â A vision of Stanley wearing a pink tutu and doing pliés floats into my mind, as Callie groans quietly.
âI have a bad case of elderly FOMO,â declares Stanley. âFear of missing out,â he adds, helpfully. âSo, before the Grim Reaper calls, Iâm trying my hand at all sorts of things. What do you think about me being the next dance sensation?â
âI think itâs wonderful,â I tell him, and I mean it. Stanley isnât opting for a life thatâs familiar or safe. Heâs breaking away from the norm, and Iâd love just a little of his courage and chutzpah.
âBy the way, when are we going to meet to discuss the book club taking part in the Charter Parade?â he asks. âIâve got loads of ideas to help us stand out from the crowd, though Iâm not sure Millie will go for them.â
âWe can have a chat about it at book club next week and maybe get a planning meeting organised?â
Stanley nods. âBetter had. Thereâs a lot to sort out in a short amount of time.
