Chapter Fourteen

The next day, I’d arranged the shifts, so Poppy opened the cafe with Melinda’s help. Jetti would come in at noon to give Poppy a break. This gave me time to work on Longfellow.

I brought Oreo with me to give Mrs. Carscadden a break from cat sitting, although she wasn’t complaining. I was starting to appreciate Oreo’s adaptability. The car ride didn’t freak him out like it had the day of the exorcism. Maybe he’d been on edge from Violet’s behavior.

When we arrived, he sniffed his way through the trailer and settled onto the back cushion of the dinette to look out the window.

I set up my blue tooth speaker, found a Motown station, and to get my energy up, danced to Marvin Gaye’s Ain’t No Mountain High Enough. I was never going to win awards with my dance moves, nor for hitting high notes. I was just happy to dance where no one could see me.

Shoot, I had that wrong. I’d spun a hundred and eighty degrees and saw a guy walking along the trail past Longfellow. And what a guy.

I couldn’t remember the last time I’d even noticed a man. I’d been single for nearly two years and hadn’t thought to change that. I lived my life as if I were unavailable, still monogamous. This mindset was habitual, and I’d put no effort into changing it. Probably because I’d been focused on Break Thyme.

I don’t know why the man walking by my trailer stunned me into silence. I could guess it had something to do with his swagger and his smile. Had he slowed down? He’d not looked away. He was cool, dark, lean, sexy, woodsy, and…I was probably making all this up. He could be a peeping Tom for all I knew. Anyway, he was past my trailer now, and I had work to do.

I found my magnets and stuck the picture I’d printed from an RV transformation blog to the fridge. This was my inspiration—the cloud-white walls and slate gray cupboards. Fabrics would be black, white, and caramel. Brushed bronze hardware. I’d found a stick-on white subway tile I planned to use for a backsplash in the kitchen and bathroom.

First, I’d set up the dining tent our family had used when camping. Next, I’d remove all the cabinet doors in the trailer. I’d brought two party tables. With the doors on tables in the tent, they’d be out of the way and easy to paint. Samantha preferred to work on Longfellow in the evening, so she’d agreed to prime the doors that night. I needed to get them lightly sanded, cleaned, and ready for her.

The sheriff’s office had given me the okay to move back into my house, but I was still living at the inn. I’d only gone home to water my plants—that was it. My house gave me chills and not the good kind. I needed more time to stamp out the vision of Violet’s dead body on my floor, but this wasn’t the only reason I wasn’t eager to return.
