The acceptance of periodized training principles was not a focal point of the training paradigm in North America during the first half of the 20th century. However, the complete domination in the strength/power sports by the Eastern European countries during international competitions in the 1960s and 1970s caused coaches in the western hemisphere to reexamine the methods they were using to develop training programs. Scientists and coaches from the United States studied the training methods of the Eastern European athletes and published a strength-training model that was based on the work of Matveyev. The training program proposed by these scientists divided the training year (i.e., the macrocycle) into four different training phases, or mesocycles (Figure 6-3). The duration for each mesocycle is approximately two to three months, depending upon the athlete.
