Chapter eight
âIsaid on the ground!â Aiden tightened his grip on the handle of his Glock, keeping his flashlight pointed at them over his crossed wrists. He'd known immediately that something was wrong the moment the apartment complex came into view. There were lights coming from every window, except the ones in Anne's apartment. After a quick call for backup, he grabbed his Glock and flashlight from the glove box and made a dash for the door.
The feeling of dread the sight sent through him still made the air feel thick. He could only hope that these guys couldn't hear that he was having difficulty breathing.
The two stared at him for what seemed like several minutes but was actually a few seconds. The guy closest to him turned and started toward him. Michelle didn't seem to have any injuries. Thank goodness.
âHands behind your head!â Aiden gritted his teeth this time, taking a few steps back. He was just about to squeeze the trigger, taking down the guy coming at him, when the apartment lit up with flashing blue lights.
Both men bolted for the back door, the other dropping Michelle to the floor with a thud. He heard Michelle let out yelp. The invaders turned the corner at the end of the hall just in time for a couple of officers to enter and yell freeze. He looked at where Michelle had been dropped. She was still sitting on the floor rubbing her arms. He could see a large purple spot on each elbow.
âYou ok?â He stuck his hand out to help her up. She stood without grabbing it. He let it drop to his side.
âI'm fine.â He couldn't tell if she was angry at him or shook up by the whole ordeal. She had every right to be angry with him. She'd nearly lost her life tonight because of him.
âC'mon. Let's get you to the ambulance.â He placed a hand on her back, leading her outside. He'd half expected her to pull from his reach, but she didn't. Maybe she wasn't mad at him. She had her palms covering both elbows. The grimace on her face told him she was in a lot of pain.
This was all his fault. No matter how badly she'd hurt him in the past. He never should've left her alone. She'd overwhelmed him, unlike anyone ever had before. Why did he let her presence get to him?
He'd done the worst thing one could possibly do when protecting a witness. He'd left her alone. This mistake was likely to cost him the job he'd wanted to do for as long as he could remember.
He deserved to lose his job. He would've recommended dismissal if any other officer made the same mistake. He took an oath to protect. He'd done just the opposite.
When they reached the ambulance parked behind the four police cruisers, an EMT led Michelle to the back and pointed. Michelle climbed inside. He turned toward the apartment. He wanted the chance to interrogate them before Emily took his badge.
