Shoulder hold Use your non-dominant hand to support his head and neck. Placing your dominant hand under his bottom, lift him up so his head rests on your shoulder. This is the perfect position for him just after he’s had his milk, although beware of potential sick down your back. Wise dads tend to cover their shoulders with a burping cloth.

Time for bed

Most parents put their newborn to sleep in a bassinet (called a Moses basket in the UK) or crib next to their bed for the first few weeks of his life. It’s reassuring to have him sleeping so close and it makes breastfeeding during the night a lot easier. But some babies are restless or noisy sleepers. The sooner you can get him used to sleeping in his own room, with a regular routine, the better.

Research has proven that babies who sleep on their backs with their feet right down at the base of the crib are less prone to SIDS, or cot death (see page 74), so all the experts now recommend this position.

It’s important to keep your baby calm before bedtime. Turn the lights low, keep your voice to a whisper, and don’t play any games. He will soon learn these are the signals for sleepy time. Gentle rocking, cuddling, or lullabies will add to the soporific effect (for both you and him). Don’t be surprised if you wake up an hour later, drooling on the floor of his nursery.
