I stretched out in my tiny one-man tent and opened my eyes. The early morning light was barely up over the horizon, and its rays were shining through the tent fabric, illuminating it. I glanced around, confused how I’d even gotten in here.

The last thing I remembered was closing my eyes in my chair. Had I gotten up in the middle of the night and climbed into my tent?

That was a possibility, however from my experience, once I was out, I was out.

But with no other explanation as to why I was suddenly in my tent instead of my chair, that was the story I was going to go with.

I wiggled and stretched as I tried to increase the blood flow in my body. Sleeping on the hard pier probably wasn’t the smartest move, but whatever. There was no way I was going to lose time in transit from my house back to the pier. If I wanted to win this competition, I needed all the time I could get.

I sat up in the tent and blew my breath into my hand. I winced at the smell. I felt the surfaces of my teeth and they felt disgusting. I needed a good brushing, that was for sure. I hastily combed my fingers through my hair and adjusted the sweatshirt that I was wearing. After grabbing my toothbrush and a change of clothes from my backpack, I hurried out of my tent, hoping to avoid Ben if at all possible.

Who knows what I did or said last night. If I could somehow stagger into my tent in the middle of the night without remembering it—what else did I do?

There was a small bathroom just off the pier, and since no one else was awake, or, if they were, they didn’t seem to be paying attention to me, I hurried toward it. Thankfully, Ben’s area was quiet. If I was lucky, I might be able to get some fishing done before he got up.

Once my teeth were brushed, my face rinsed, and my clothes changed, I felt like a new woman. I balled up my old clothes under my arm and pulled open the bathroom door only to walk straight into Ben.

His hands surrounded my arms as if he were trying to stop that from happening. As soon as I felt his grip, I froze. Like a deer in headlights.

I blinked a few times as I tried to ground myself. It was shocking to have him touch me. But even more shocking was the fact that he didn’t let me go. Instead, he leaned in closer as if he were trying to catch my gaze.

“Are you okay?” he asked, his voice low. I wanted to believe he was being quiet because it was dawn and he hadn’t spoken yet today, but the irrational and crazy part of me wanted to think that, perhaps, he was having the same reaction to our proximity as I was.

And then reality hit me, and thankfully, there was a part of my brain that was still able to get my body to move.
