Chapter 27

Chip picked up on her uneasiness right away.

She waited for him on the porch, enjoying a rare warm winter afternoon. Chip parked his bike behind a bush, walked up the steps, and sat down next to her on the bench, body buzzing with some kind of tension.

“You’re off today,” he said.

“You too.”

He couldn’t sit still on the bench. “I’m excited. You’re—there’s something off.”

“Weird mood. I’ve been trying to shake it since Wednesday.” She shrugged.

“I know what’ll shake it. Are you ready for your adventure…”

“In Chip-land?” she finished for him and laughed. That weird feeling was fading. “Where are we going?”

“As usual, you drive. At least at first…”

“Oooo a hint. Can I guess?”

“Sure,” he said as they climbed into Violet’s car.

“Go-Karts.”

“Excellent guess, but no. Want to try again?”

“MVA. You’re applying for your license.”

“Terrible guess.” Chip held a hand to his chest in mock distress. “I’ll have you know, I’ve had my license since I was sixteen and three months.”

“…what happened in those three months?”

“It’s too distressing to talk about. Now, focus. I’m giving you very important directions.”

“You haven’t given me any directions yet! We’re sitting in the driveway.”

“Shh. Head out to 70. We’re going westbound. There. Direction.”

“I have to be home by tomorrow, you know. Wyatt.”

“Ooohhh she’s proposing an overnight.” Chip waggled his eyebrows. “Don’t worry; we’re not going too far. I’ll have you home before dinner.” He rubbed his hands in anticipation. “This is going to be so much fun.”

They exited the highway and turned on to an older road that led through an industrial area of Frederick. While Violet loved Windy Knoll, she didn’t spend too much time out of her small town. The cities in Maryland were sprawling, and they made her nervous. She much preferred the coziness of being where she’d grown up, where she knew the buildings and the people, and they knew her. Everybody knew everyone else’s business; but for the most part, people were respectful and pretended like they kept to themselves.

The clusters of buildings in a city encroached too much on the sky, giving her a feeling of claustrophobia. At least in this industrial area, wide, empty parking lots gave the illusion of space. But acres of pavement were somehow less welcoming than acres of cornfields.

Violet pulled into the lot where Chip directed her and parked where a few other cars idled, all in a line.

“What’s this?” she asked. “Is this an old stadium? Wait—is this payback for me kicking your butt at soccer? Are we playing baseball in the stadium?”

“No. And bad guess, because you ignored my earlier hint. We’re parking here, but this is where we walk.”

“Okay,” Violet looked a little doubtful. “Do I get another hint?”

“No. Because all will be revealed in mere minutes. Come on. It’s not far.”

They got out of the car and walked toward the stadium. When they’d almost reached it, Chip cut left. “This way.” They walked around the stadium toward the east lot. More cars, rows of camp chairs, and orange cones dotted the pavement.
