Chapter 11

So now Shirley knew who he was would it put her off him or would it bring back the tender feelings he used to have when they were eight? Would she consider marrying him? Did she have any feelings for him now? He certainly did for her.

No. Of course it wouldn’t because she obviously knew who he was from the start. Knowing him didn’t mean she was falling over to marry him. In fact, she backed off the thought of marriage the minute she realised she could adopt the babies without him. That certainly wasn’t love.

And what were his feelings for her? Tender feelings, if that was what he could call them. Often she frustrated him and in those moments he wasn’t at all sure that he wanted to marry her. But there were feelings, he knew, and if those feelings were love, then he loved her. Well, he did love her but that could be as a friend which he hoped she regarded him.

She was beautiful though, outstandingly so. Slim but curvaceous where she should be. Large eyes. A nicely shaped chin. Silky hair. Nose just the right size. He couldn’t see her feet very well but they weren’t too big. Her hands were smooth.

He looked at his own hands and smiled in satisfaction. Not a callous in sight. Some men might think him effeminate but he didn’t care, which was why he constantly creamed his hands, even his face. Would Shirley think that wasn’t manly?

He did that even when he was homeless as he spent some of the little money he managed to earn on such things. Just because he was an orphan and nobody wanted him didn’t mean he had to let himself go, he felt, which included the baths he took in the clean water he found downstream. Anyway, some woman would want to marry him one day and he needed to look good for her.

But Rose didn’t want him though that wasn’t because his looks put her off. Unfortunately he couldn’t say that of Shirley because she did see him and backed out of marrying him.

So did he love her? What did love really involve? Tenderness? He felt that sometimes. A desire to be with someone? He liked being with Shirley. Protectiveness? He certainly felt protective. But then he felt protective towards the babies and he also loved them.

If his prospective bride had married him he wouldn’t have been able to marry Shirley, though he probably would have met her because they were in the same town. If he realised who she was he couldn’t have married her because he would already have a wife. How would that make him feel if it did occur?

A lot of ifs with one thing missing. He wasn’t married. Nor was he likely to be because Shirley didn’t want him. This was the tenth day since he met her and a lot happened in that time, the kind of things he never envisaged. By now he expected to be well and truly married to the woman who let him down.
