CHAPTER SEVEN

The Decline and Revival of the Trombone, 1630–1830

Over the course of the seventeenth century, the trombone disappeared completely from some places. It persisted in others (notably German and Italian cities), but usually with reduced significance. The chief exception to this pattern of decline was the Habsburg imperial court, where it took on an importance that it had not had there before. Late in the eighteenth century, Rome, Vienna, and Paris became launching pads for the worldwide revival of the trombone.

The year 1630 makes a convenient date to begin the present chapter, but signs of the decline of wind instruments were evident long before then. This chapter will examine the near extinction and subsequent revival of the trombone, ending chronologically with the music of Beethoven and Schubert, which completed the acceptance of the trombone as a permanent member of the symphony orchestra.
