Chapter eighteen

Truce

On the Wednesday afternoon our procession of four cars pulled up in front of the house. I hadn’t met Nathan yet but he scored bonus points for driving a nifty Audi TT; my second-choice car had I not fallen in love with my Beetle. He scored even more bonus points when he stepped out of the car looking particularly cute. And fashionable. Always a bonus when you’re putting your image in somebody else’s hands.

Lena had to be doing something right by attracting all these super-hot guys and getting to keep them as friends so I tried to relax and go with the flow. The way Nathan observed me made it clear he knew all about me and had seen first-hand what I’d done to Lena. He had me at the disadvantage since I knew nothing about him except that he’d willingly given up some of his free time to help me.

‘You lived here?’ Lena asked, overawed by the house.

‘Survived would be a more accurate description.’ I couldn’t miss the glances that bounced between the three of them. ‘Shall we?’

Armed with two rolls of rubbish bags, I led the way up the steps and unlocked the door. I’d already separated the house key from the bunch on my keyring so that I could leave it behind when I pulled the door closed. It seemed more symbolic to do it on my own terms. The credit card too. Done with the constant reminders in my purse, I just needed to get in and get out with the minimum amount of fuss.

To their credit, Lena and Nathan didn’t gush about the magnificence of the house even though their expressions said what their voices didn’t. They followed me up to the top floor without saying anything at all until I opened the door to my dressing room.

‘Bloody hell,’ Lena said, her eyes bugging out. ‘I think we’re going to need more bags.’ She stepped into the room and turned full circle. ‘Jeez. And Chloe reckons I have a lot of stuff.’

‘Yeah but a lot of it is really small.’ Nathan picked up one of my skirts and pressed it up against his jeans. ‘I’m ninety-nine per cent sure my boxer shorts are longer than this one. It’ll take up no room at all.’ He tossed it into the open sack then picked up another one. ‘What? Why is everyone looking at me like that?’

Lena punched him in the upper arm. ‘You haven’t even spoken to Alice yet, Nathan. How is she supposed to know about your twisted sense of humour?’

‘Spoken like somebody who truly knows me,’ he said, playfully returning her punch then heading for me with his arm extended. ‘Hi, Alice. I’m Nathan.’

I shook his hand. ‘Hi, Nathan.’

‘Awesome. Now that we’re acquainted, can I go back to cracking jokes about the more amusing items in your collection?’

‘Knock yourself out.’

‘Thank you. Admittedly I would have done it anyway but it’s always good to have permission,’ he deadpanned.

‘And you’re sure this guy is a friend, Lena?’ I asked.
