Every Friday before an away game, three giant buses pulled into the Primrose High school parking lot. Each bus was painted blue and gold for our school colors, and our logo—a panther—was splashed on the side.

The first bus was for players. It had compartments beneath that opened up and let them shove their equipment inside.

The second bus was for cheerleaders and the band.

The third bus was for parents, boosters, and teachers.

If you were dating a football player, after the bell rang, you’d wait by the first bus. When the boys exited the school, they’d walk through a long procession of girlfriends, say their goodbyes, then jump on the bus. Sometimes, they’d wave out the window as the bus pulled away.

I’d spent the better part of my high school existence thinking this ritual was a silly waste of time. But now, thanks to my relationship with Joshua, I stood in a long line of girlfriends, some that I recognized, some that I didn’t. The girls standing next to me—both seniors with names I didn’t know—were loudly discussing whether they should kiss their boyfriends goodbye.

The first girl was slim with brown hair she’d pulled back. Her face was dotted with freckles and she wore glasses with thick black frames. They suited her—she looked smart and cute. She was texting someone while she spoke. “I think you should always kiss your boyfriend goodbye. Not just for away games. But whenever you go away. Because you just never know. I heard that a girl at Copper Lake didn’t kiss her boyfriend goodbye, and then he got into a car accident. And I would hate it if that happened.”

“You don’t seriously think that if you don’t kiss your boyfriend, he’s going to get into a car accident, do you?” The other girl was shorter than me and wearing a t-shirt and shorts. Her skin was tanned, and she was blowing large, pink bubbles with bubble gum. She let the bubble pop, then pulled it back into her mouth. “I don’t think you should kiss him goodbye before a game. I never kiss Martin. Not before a game. I want him to have energy. He needs to think about the game, not me. If he comes back and they’ve won, then he gets a kiss.”

“And what if he loses?”

“Then he knows he should play harder next time.”

Both girls laughed, though I wasn’t entirely sure if the one chewing bubblegum was joking.

What about me?

What was I supposed to do?

What did Joshua’s ex used to do? Should I do the same thing?

This was my first time in the lineup, and I did not know what people were expecting. Or what Joshua was expecting. We’d agreed that we would not kiss… but we’d come awfully close a few times. Would people be suspicious if we didn’t kiss? We tried to be all over each other as much as we could in the halls—his arms around my shoulder, my hand intertwined in his—but we’d never kissed in front of other people.
