We took our leave soon after. A thoughtful Sampson and I walking our way down to where Watkins waited with the car.

Our absence allowed his mood to improve, and he greeted us with his usual dismissive politeness. A glint in his eyes told me his time with the Ford was time well spent.

“Well?”

“Later, guv. Later. I'm still thinking.”

“In which case, take me back to Fournier Street. We'll meet later in the café where Danny's mum works.”

Both men stopped. Stared. Glared. And like that, our camaraderie vanished. I was persona non grata ... again.
